Re: Fish Coming Out of a Dead Mans Body
Not candiru but a closely related larger cousin. I forget the name but they are catfish. Jeremy Hunter (river monsters) did a doc on these nasty critters. They get into the body cavities & eat them from the insides out. Candiru follow a stream of urine/urea to into the body of other fish. Sometimes mistaking a human urinating as a food source, follow the stream & lodge them selves into the urethra. They lock their spines into the flesh making removal difficult & surgery necessary. |

Re: Fish Coming Out of a Dead Mans Body
Darkest Angel: Vandellia is the name of the genus, it belongs to the family of Trichomycteridae: some call "candiru" only Vandellia others call "candiru" only Vandellia cirrhosa, according to others "candiru" are only those belinging to the subfamilies Stegophilina and Vandelliinae : but they DO are candiru, all the aforementioned are: Vandelia & Candiru = same thing, ffs. Very small candirus do what you described, BUT this does not mean that the bigger ones (which can grow to a size of almost half a meter (17/18 in) can't do what you see in the video: actually, the adults will enter any hole they'll find, it happens on daily basis in Brazil, in Colombia, in Ecuador, in Bolivia.... And BTW: "candiru" is a name given to them by locals, waaaaay before the first serious zoologist (Valenciennes) went there. It's like to say that a siberian tiger belongs to Felidae family but my gato does not. So, basically, if they are not candirus, AKA Vandellia cirrhosa, AKA Vandellia, AKA añero, AKA toothpick fish, AKA vampire fish... What are they? Did you and Jeremy Hunter discover some new species? Good. Now, please, fill-in the following form: Kingdom: Phylum: Class: Order: Superfamily: Family: Genus: Species: Because if you claim that they are NOT Candirus, you MUST know what exactly they are, right? |

Re: Fish Coming Out of a Dead Mans Body
Another fish known simply as a candiru is the candiru asu, and it is often confused with the parasite that feeds on blood. This type feeds primarily on organs and meat. It has a small, circular mouth that is full of sharp teeth, which it uses to chew a hole in its victim. Once a hole is made, the fish eats its way into the body and consumes it from the inside. These fish will not only eat dead bodies, but any body that is incapacitated in the water. Yummy.
