Re: Firefighter Dies Attempting To Save Suicidal Woman

Technically he did have a rope and was tethered, but its not clear if it wasn't secured properly, or he thought he didn't have enough time to secure it, or some other issue altogether.

I think he intended on grabbing the person's arm from the side to bring them down towards him, but the roof breaking sealed his fate. Just looking at his momentum, I think he would've been fine if it didnt break, the other person would've still died... but he would've been able to go home that night.

One thing's for sure, that dude was a hero. Takes some serious balls to try something like that.
He tried to Superman it the whole way down too.

Re: Firefighter Dies Attempting To Save Suicidal Woman

No.

I'm shaming a society that refuses to let people who WANT to die kill themselves, and compels hardworking emergency personnel to risk their lives in order to save someone who doesn't WANT to be saved. Just like there is such a thing as "premeditated murder", there should also be such a thing as "premeditated suicide".

You find a woman whose fallen 20 stories to her death already on the sidewalk....fine. Investigate to find out if it's a suicide or homicide.

You find the woman at the top of a 20 story building, threatening to kill herself....let her fucking kill herself. We aren't gonna run out of women any time soon, and for every one that dies, I'm sure there are like 50 born that very day to take her place. Just let suicidal people die already....there's no need to put OTHER people's lives in danger to save them.
The laws about saving suicides came from about because post-attempt interviews reveal that more than 3 out of 5 people were being pressured into it by someone who wanted them dead. Inheritance issues, jealousy, covering up a crime, and family hatred towards kids who were gay or wanted to marry someone outside the approved choice. 3 out of 5 people felt suicide was their only choice to get out of something the law could help them with. As these laws passed and other laws set up to help people in these kinds of situations, suicides across the Western world plummeted.

Do you think it's an accident that we see so many fan swingers from places like India, where those old pressures are still present? Or have you heard that the same thing is now being observed in countries like Holland and Switzerland with assisted suicides? A large majority of the people taking that route report feeling pressure from family and heirs to get it over with. Plenty of perfectly healthy people are getting euthanized for reasons that have nothing to do with escaping chronic pain.

Too many people nowadays want to tear down the fence without asking who put it there and why.

Re: Firefighter Dies Attempting To Save Suicidal Woman

Are we positive either died? I feel almost exactly that far, and while it fucked up my back and I had to crawl like 4 blocks back to my car at 2am, I didn't start feeling the lasting effects of the fall until 20 years later. It hurt like shit for weeks, but my young dumb ass never went to the hospital. All I'm saying is that height is wholly survivable.

Im leaning towards he thought he was secure. That's why he took that risk. Also I think that's why he kept holding onto the person, possibly thinking and moment now he will stop falling and maybe save the person

Re: Firefighter Dies Attempting To Save Suicidal Woman

How tragic, I love firefighters. Most of them choose that profession because they genuinely want to help others. They don't get paid much so it's definitely not for the money.

My brother is a firefighter and I frequently worry about his safety.

Re: Firefighter Dies Attempting To Save Suicidal Woman

They used a 100 foot long safety rope on a 75 ft tall building.
That is EXACTLY what happened!!! One just has to WATCH the vid carefully to see the rope!

It was like... a Road Runner/Wile E. Cayote WB cartoon... with real and deadly results :-(
