Re: Fighting An Acrophobia Like A Man

I don't have acrophobia but I always wonder if I'm susceptible to that strange "don't fuck with nature!" vertigo that occurs when tourists sit at the precipice of the Grand Canyon and pose for selfies or clown around with family/friends, then when they stand up, if they're facing the canyon, their head suddenly goes into a whirl and they plummet to their deaths down into the bottom of the canyon. This happened to several people over the years. Must be intense
I don't know about that but I had a weird experience when I did my first freefall jump. As I was standing outside the plane, I said to myself "You got this" & proceeded to jump. For the next several seconds, my brain kind of froze & I did what is called "potato-chipping" which is basically when you're just fluttering around. Fortunately, you start out with a couple of jumpmasters holding onto your chute harness & they stabilized me until I could snap out of it & successfully complete the jump. It was such a drastic change from flying along on a plane & then suddenly falling from 14,000 feet that it took a couple of moments for the brain to adjust. That never happened again in following jumps because my brain was more prepared for the experience.

Re: Fighting An Acrophobia Like A Man

"A man in Shanghai, after losing his job, cut off the mortgage payment, his house was auctioned, and he still owed the bank 2 million. After working hard for many years and finally having nothing, he chose to jump off a building in despair. He once begged the bank for mercy, but was rejected by the bank manager. He went to the bank manager's house and jumped off the building: 'If you don't agree to this, I will die for you.'"

Sounds like you did it the old-style way, solo. Today you sign up to go skydiving and your instructor is required to ride with you directly behind, and it looks embarrassing if you're a guy and they took a pic for a memento, and your instructor is clinging tightly to your body and shoulders from behind, looking like he's giving you the hot beef injection. My online friend from Texas showed me his pic of the occasion, and I said, "Who's that guy? Is this a honeymoon vacation pic? I didn't know you were gay, bro!"

I'm a firm believer that people should be able to freefall if you're paying for the service, and if you panic and can't pull the rope or there's a malfunction with the 'shute, you should have the right to go splat.
