If we are to believe what the father said, the mother was actually having a side relationship with his bestfriend who is also their neighbor. He also mentions a phone call from some guy (intercepted on the wife's phone) in which the husband subsequently confronted and that guy didnt know that the wife had a husband after they had sex.
