A, wife of R. who died from accidental fire while making suicide threats before officials who came to evict the family from their house, also succumbed to burn injuries last Monday evening.

A. was admitted at the medical college hospital after being critically injured in the fire.

The heart-breaking incident took place on December 22. R. (47) and A. (40) who were residing in Pongil, India, attempted to set themselves on fire when the Lawyer's Commission and police tried to evict them from their house as part of a court order.

R. held A. close to him and poured petrol on themselves. He raised suicide threat when the authorities came to evict them. Meanwhile, the police tried to shove off the lighter from his hand but the fire spread all over. A policeman also sustained slight burns in the accident.

R. who suffered over 70 percent burns died at around 12 am on Monday. The relatives have demanded to cremate R’s body at the same house where they were facing eviction.

R’s revelation that he didn’t deliberately set fire and that fire spread when the policeman tried to snatch it away from them, had made big headlines.

The sons of the couple had come down heavily against police on social media.

R’s son, a student, had said that the police came when the family was having food and asked them to leave immediately though they asked for 30 minutes’ time.

The family’s neighbour had approached Principal Munsiff court in January stating R. encroached her land. The court had then ordered that no construction should be done on the encroached land.

In a heart-rending video, a teenager pleading with the police to allow the burial of his father while on the other hand, his younger brother digging the grave while his mother was in the Hospital and close to dying.

The teens’ father R. died on Monday due to burn injuries, a few days after a self-immolation bid during a botched eviction attempt that followed a court order on land encroachment. His wife A. also died of burns a few hours later, rendering the children orphans.

Following both of their parent’s death, both the teens R. and R. had to bury their father on their own as few were willing to help in burying him in a property over which a dispute had been raging.

“Sir, my mother is also about to die. You all have killed them. Now you won’t even let us bury them?” the younger son R. was seen in the video asking a police officer with a raised finger.

The video posted on social media also showed an elderly woman saying “We are begging before you with folded hands. Please don’t harass us.”
