This is what I was thinking. He likely broke his back and was trying to swim, but couldn't move his back to lift his head out of the water. The people who tried to save him were absolutely useless. They could barely hold their breath for five seconds and were swimming very slowly. |

That was one hell of a belly flop, bet it knocked his guts everywhere. might as well have jumped onto a solid floor. He either lost his footing or hes never jumped before, no skill in that descent at all.
