Crucifixion goes back to the time of the Phoenicians, which was back to about the time of 1 millenial BC. The way they did it was to keep their criminals alive as long as they could with water, and smacking them around to wake them up. Then there were the Martyrs of Japan in the 17th century. It's fallen out of fashion, because, as we see by these videos, torture has become an exquisitely honed practice.
