A woman died Friday at the hands of her ex-husband in the middle of the street in the northwest of Quito, the National Police of Ecuador reported. Almost a month ago, a pregnant woman was murdered by her partner in Ibarra.

Neighborhood residents alerted the Police of the event and that the aggressor carried a white weapon and was next to the victim.

In a snapshot posted by the Police on Twitter, the individual is sitting on the sidewalk of a street next to the woman's body and with apparent signs of violence.

According to the account of the witnesses quoted by local media, the man, after stabbing several times his victim who fell to the ground, he started self-inflicting injuries with the weapon.

"We inform that upon receiving a distress call to the ECU 911, police units immediately moved to the place where, unfortunately, the death of the victim was confirmed," the National Police reported.

He adds that "the perpetrator, after committing the act, made cuts with the knife to himself".

The authorities specified that the suspect "was apprehended and transferred to a health center under police custody" and that an investigation of the case has been opened in order to bring him to justice.

The statistics collected by the Undersecretary of Human Rights and Worship, indicate that from August 10, 2014 to December 23, 2018, 313 cases of femicide were reported in the country, of which 309 were judicialized, 143 with judicial resolution and 157 have some type of sentence, condemnatory or ratifying of innocence.

However, the official data is in contrast with the data provided by local NGOs working with the issue and doubling deaths due to femicide in four years.

Since it began this year four women have been reported dead victims of sexist violence in Ecuador.
