A security camera recording documented the exact moment in which an inmate lost his life after falling from a height of about 8 meters.

The incident occurred during the afternoon of Tuesday, December 31, at the Los Andes Penitentiary Center in Chile.

Inmate identified as Matías B. climbed onto the roof of dormitory 5, presumably with the purpose of escaping.

Gendarmerie personnel asked the subject to come down, but he ignored them.

The deceased, who was serving a sentence of three years and one day for receiving stolen goods, allegedly tried to jump out of the prison when his feet got caught in shark-tipped wire and he fell headfirst.

The death was confirmed by the Valparaíso Regional Gendarmerie Directorate, which stated that “according to preliminary information, the inmate had attempted to evade the security of the facility by using the roof, from where he fell, dying immediately, without any action by third parties.”
