Elderly Man Killed, Two Injured, As Truck Crashes Into Pedestrians in NYC
A 77-year-old man, Ting J.Y., was killed, and two others, including Ting's 52-year-old daughter, were injured when a flatbed truck, overloaded with wooden pallets, jumped the curb and struck a group of pedestrians in Canal St, in New York City's Chinatown. The force of the impact sent Ting and his daughter - on their way to Ting's doctor's appointment - crashing into a 71-year-old woman. The flatbed truck driver, 66-year-old Milton W., veered back onto the road and struck a van and box truck. Ting's daughter's spine was fractured in several places, although there is hope that she will walk again. The 71-year-old woman suffered minor leg injuries. Milton remained at the scene and passed a breathalyser test. It turned out his truck's brake lines were leaking and the truck had very little brake fluid left. Milton wasn't criminally charged, but investigators gave him several criminal court summonses for low brake fluid, brake fluid leaking from his brake lines, and inoperable left and right brake lights. Ting's family reported anger over Milton not being charged, and have vowed to hire a lawyer. Milton had been summoned twice before, once in 2024 for failing to yield to a pedestrian and in 2018 for disobeying a traffic device. |
