Elderly Brazilian Woman Crossing the Road Gets Run Over by Two Vehicles

A 72-year-old woman, Ilmes D.M.d.C., was crossing the road when she was run over by a pick-up truck. Her body was thrown over the median, and was run over by a second pick-up, tearing off her legs in the process.

According to a police delegate, the pick-up driver is set to be charged with intentional homicide:

Despite the victim being less than fifty centimetres from reaching the central median of the roadway and completing her crossing, and despite [the first driver] having a wide field of vision and room to manoeuvre on the road—with no vehicles in front of him or in the central and right lanes in the moments preceding the incident—he did not attempt to brake his vehicle nor swerve to avoid the victim.

Shortly afterward, the driver returned to the scene of the accident. He was detained and taken to the police station. His defence stated that he “is extremely distressed by the tragic event.”

That's brutal. I dunno if intentional homicide is the right evaluation though. Careless driving, maybe. But to some degree the lady has to take responsibility. She went out into the road (and slowed down somewhat, weirdly).

. Was this all part of god's plan, not to kill her once, but twice? Was this old lady so evil that he let her live to a ripe old age before punishing her?

The arrested man is a 68-year-old lawyer, Paulo Roberto Gomes dos Santos.

Paulo Roberto has previously been convicted of two homicides in separate cases. He was sentenced for the killing of a Civil Police chief in Rio de Janeiro in a crime that occurred in the late 1990s, and also for the murder of a nursing student.

According to police, the lawyer shot and killed police chief Eduardo da Rocha Coelho, who was struck by a gunshot to the back of the neck. After the crime, he fled the state and began living in Mato Grosso under a pseudonym. In 2006, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

In another case, Paulo was charged by the Public Prosecutor’s Office with the murder of nursing student Rosemeire Maria da Silva, 25, which occurred in 2004 in Juscimeira, Mato Grosso.

According to investigations, the young woman was asphyxiated in a motel bathtub, had her body decapitated, and the remains were thrown into rivers in the region. He was sentenced to 19 years in prison for triple-qualified homicide, concealment of a corpse, and document forgery.

In 2010, the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) opened a suitability proceeding against Paulo Roberto. Despite this, his status in the National Register of Lawyers is listed as regular. The OAB said it had ordered Paulo’s immediate suspension from practicing law and referred the case to its Ethics and Discipline Tribunal.
