A 59-year-old Ecuadorian immigrant was fatally stabbed during a chaotic rush-hour attack aboard a northbound J train in Queens, police said.

The victim, identified as Mesias Lojano, was attacked on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, around 5:20 p.m. at the Woodhaven Boulevard subway station.

According to investigators, Lojano was stabbed multiple times in the neck and chest inside the train car. First responders performed CPR on Lojano at the scene before rushing him to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect, identified by police as 25-year-old Jyrell Thomas of the Bronx, fled the station on foot. However, a courageous group of riders immediately gave chase leading Police to him within 10 minutes. He was hiding on a roof. Thomas stated, "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to."

Lojano, a resident of Corona, Queens, had lived in his neighborhood for a decade. His son, William Lojano, told about his father's life as a dedicated construction worker, husband, father of six and grandfather of four. Neighbors echoed this sentiment, describing Lojano as an excellent, peaceful individual who never bothered anyone.

The NYPD has charged Jyrell Thomas with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. An internal police report initially noted that Thomas appeared to be emotionally disturbed.

While police initially stated that an argument may have preceded the stabbing, updated findings from the investigation indicate the attack appeared entirely unprovoked, with no prior interaction between the two men before the violence erupted. Authorities noted that Thomas has one prior arrest.

Earlier in the month, Thomas was arrested after allegedly stealing $23 worth of merchandise from a Target store in the Bronx. When police confronted him, he attempted to flee. He was subsequently charged with petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, and obstruction of governmental administration.
