I wondered what put him out like that, he wasn't in a full-on coma because he still reacted defensively when they tried to cut his ear and stab his neck. They probably hit him over the head with something? But then again, there was no visible head wound, so it's a bit of a mystery. Also, the blood flow from his neck was pretty meagre so it didn't seem like it would be a fatal cut/injury.
