No matter what your "political" views may be, a government that kills its own people for protesting is committing the worst kind of Human Rights Violation! Seriously, all "religion" and "politics" aside, EVERYONE has the right to believe in what they want and express that belief. Violence is the "bastard child" of close-mindedness and intolerance!

Judging by the location of that wound, the bullet probably hit his spine after it when through the lower part of the trachea, hense the blood coming from his mouth. As for the blood itself, there are some major blood vessels in that area just above the heart. If it would have hit about an inch or two lower, he wouldnt have suffered for so long.
