When I read the title I thought, well maybe the poor bugger's momentum carried him into the shaft when he kicked the door open. That would be still be a first class exhibition of stupidity, but combined with rotten luck. But no, he kicked the door open and then, without looking, stepped into the empty shaft. That gets him a Darwin Award for sure.
