If you don't know CPR, I'd suggest you take the class. It's well worth it. Until then, compress the chest 1/3 the depth of the chest, two fingers down from the nipple line. On the sternum, but not right on the lower part of it, where the rib cage joins. Just above that. Compress at a rate of 100 compressions per minute. Don't bother breathing, just do the compressions. If you need help staying at the correct rate of 100 per minute, go to the beat of the song "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees. Or, if you're feeling morbid, "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen will work also. |

The comment was probably intended as insulting, although it does have a factual basis, quite possibly unknown to the poster. It is more a matter of poor people, in third world countries, many of whom are dark complexioned who don't know how to swim. Swimming lessons are a luxury that they can't afford. I am married to a lady who comes from such circumstances, and she tells me that few people from her village could swim and that this is typical in her country of origin.

My instructor told us to sing 'Nelly the Elephant' or 'Happy Birthday' whilst doing compressions, both of which I found quite inappropriate |

Re: Drowned Girl That Tried to Save 2 of Her Drowning Friends Pulled from River
This is all good info, and in accord with the latest teachings. I've been interested in this field for about 50 years (having taken the CPR course both much earlier and then again closer to the present time) and have seen the guidance change many times during that period. Whatever method is in vogue is based on the latest theories, and nobody can be certain that it is better than other methods. This is frustrating but when you think about it, unavoidable. After all it is not possible to unwind the clock and do studies to determine how many people who died when Method/Technique A was applied would have survived had Method/Technique B been used, or vice versa. Nor can one do controlled studies in this area comparing different methods since all suffocation and near suffocation instances are different from each other (e.g. a person who has been without breathing and/or heart beat for 2 minutes vs 3 minutes and many other such detailed differences) All in all, CPR is an "inexact science".
