Re: Drowned Girl That Tried to Save 2 of Her Drowning Friends Pulled from River
The long term debate over the use of the Heimlich maneuver in drowning cases (whether or not to use it prior to starting CPR) is based on the notion of getting much of the water out of the victim's lungs prior to getting air into them, the idea being that the lungs can function more efficiently with the water out. Obviously, there wouldn't be such a debate if drowning people didn't aspirate water into their lungs! The reflex spasm you refer to does occur in some cases, but it is not a universal phenomenon. I learned this in CPR class where the Heimlich maneuver debate was discussed by the instructor.

I just wanted to jump into the video and scream at them to lay her on the ground, clear her airway and start CPR! How frustrating to watch that video...I can't believe no one knew CPR. |

It does not matter if you can do cpr! If they had given her any sort of mouth to mouth it may of revived her! Any oxygen to her blood gives her the chance, unfortunately some of our poor deprived countries have no education of the basics, sad world we live in! Bless her!
