Unfortunately for the driver the flames probably melted the plastic door handles on both the inside and outside. Car manufacturers are cutting corners everywhere and sometimes it can cost lives.
If the heat was hot enough to melt the plastic door handles, your skin is beyond fucked and you are going to die anyways...

Re: ~Driver Dies In Fiery Crash In Burnaby, B.C.~

You know, after watching this video and seeing the helpless bystanders who wanted to help, I am going to go buy a fire extinguisher to keep in my vehicle.
Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
Ever since the very first video I saw on this site, of a guy burning to death trapped in a car, I have put tow chains and a fire extinguisher in every car I own.

I've seen people use 3 or 4 extinguishers but the fuel just keeps reigniting on hot exhaust. That's where the tow chains come in. Either use another vehicle to PUSH the wreck off the fuel puddle (very dangerous as your car will have to pass over it) or hook the chains (nylon straps will just melt) and drag the vehicle off the puddle...

the guy at the end "What happened bro, accident?" Fuck me sherlock.
The driver could have been a Russian journalist?

But seriously, if the first person did not run, then they would have gotten him out. They all expect something Michael Bay-esque

Too bad nobody had a fire extinguisher, in this case it might have actually helped
Exactly. These bystanders deserve the Darwin Award for not running to one of the 10s of nearby houses for a fire extinguisher. Could've saved them maybe :'(

Re: ~Driver Dies In Fiery Crash In Burnaby, B.C.~

I have seen three vehicles on fire and all three did indeed explode. When it happened the fuel tank made a pop like sound and the flames intensified upward and shot outward slightly. Heat felt from a distance also increased. Although not like something you'd see in a movie, you definitely wouldn't want to be standing next to it.

Re: ~Driver Dies In Fiery Crash In Burnaby, B.C.~

I'm missing the "heroic" part of the video. Maybe it is too hot to stand it, but why not try pulling the driver out of the vehicle? Maybe the driver is pinned down by the steering wheel and dash. The bystanders are worried about an explosion. I have never seen a vehicle's gas tank explode, but "the word on the street" is that gas tanks go POP and don't explode.

Chances are they were driving drunk and/or stupid and speeding to crash into a tree hard enough to rip off the front axle. A wise person at the scene wouldn't risk their own safety and life/health to save such a driver. Even a gas tank that goes POP might shower you with flaming gas, and then you are a DR video section celebrity and are fucked...
It looks like the entire inside is in flames, so not sure how they would pull him out.

Re: ~Driver Dies In Fiery Crash In Burnaby, B.C.~

Why didn’t the people who kept yelling, “Open the car!” just open the car themselves?

Re: ~Driver Dies In Fiery Crash In Burnaby, B.C.~

The irony in these comments about "man up" and saving this person...

Anyone that think this was preventable, at the point we're witnessing in the video, has never been in a situation remotely similar. A fully engulfed vehicle is near impossible to put out. The flames are intense. As a firefighter we're taught if you can feel the heat through our bunker gear, there's no hope for the person we're rescuing. If you've ever tried to pull someone out of flames like this, you'll find that their skin will just slip right off like loose clothing, and the only way anyone was even going to have that chance to pull this guy out would be if they were fully geared.

Also, keeping an extinguisher in your car is a great idea, but it's only going to be effective early on. Once the fire has become this large, you aren't getting it out with any number of extinguisher that most people can fit in their car.

One other thing, cars may not necessarily explode like in the movies and video games, but they do flash over. Imagine pouring gas on a camp fire and trying to stand in the same spot that was already keep you toasty before you started dumping the fuel. It's going to burn your skin, your eyes, your lungs, etc.... Hopefully you're able to stay conscious, but if you do pass out, you're just as dead as the person in the car.

Just wait until more electric cars are introduced on the streets. Much harder to put out a fire and burns hotter. Those lithium ion batteries are no joke.
