He has a decent enough claim for self defense. He couldn’t have possibly known whether the guy had a weapon or what intentions he might have with that smack, and his reaction was fast, instinctive, and there was no further attack after the fact. Hell, he could argue he didn’t even realize he had a knife in hand until too late. Struck with whatever I had as soon as I was hit because I was scared. Boom. Self-defense.
