Many of the nurses I know were the types of women who were leathery and broken in like old ball mitts by the time they left high school, with nursing being more of a last resort rather than a lifelong dream fulfilled or a selfless passion for helping others, after the realization hit that their looks were no longer going to propel them into the upper echelons of society. No one suspects that they are as intelligent as doctors, or even capable of becoming doctors.
