I don't think he knew how they were going to kill him. They had a gun on him so maybe he just assumed he would be shot in the head. If that's the case, I'm sure he was regretting that assumption with the first whack.

My first thought was that he should have attacked the guy holding the gun on him with the hoe. He'd be shot immediately, and not have to suffer like he did.

I guess in Brazil, you're more of a man if you accept your fate placidly.
He's more of a man for accepting his fate because he knows his family will get wiped out if he doesn't, would you try to escape knowing your actions spells death for your loved ones?
