Re: Died with His Head Up the Rear-end of a Tractor
IMO, it looks more like he got lifted up by the 3-point hitch arms and crushed his skull against the rear fenders. Like in your picture, PTO entaglements often wrap body-parts/bodies around the shaft in less than a second. He looks more smushed up against the fenders than wrapped/sucked against the PTO take-off, which should be about where his left-chest is located. He might even be too high to get caught in the PTO take-off. He's hooking up a disk plow, which won't use the PTO anyway. Somehow that 3-point hitch got raised suddenly while trying to hook up that disc plow and killed the poor fucker. |

Re: Died with His Head Up the Rear-end of a Tractor
And for those of you unfamiliar with tractors, PTO stands for "Power Take-Off". It's multi-toothed gear that sticks out of the back of larger tractors. You use it to spin all sorts of implements, such as mowers, mower-conditioners, rakes, hay balers, etc. I've got a 1968 John Deere 4020 Diesel. One the first things I was taught about it was "If you are running anything off the PTO, the first thing you always do is to turn off the PTO from the cab/seat before you dismount the tractor." Mr. PTO spins at either 540 or 720 rpm. My tractor is rated at 96hp at the PTO and it can't tell the difference if it's rolling up a 1000+ pound bale of hay or wrapping me around it like taffy. Be safe out there, folks. |
