Re: Depressed 72 Years Old Man Jumps to His Death

that old man wasn't weak by any stretch, he hung on to the side of that building with one hand for quite a while. i think he jumped to piss everyone off. and if his son had to sell the house, i am going to guess one of two reasons since i have an elderly parent and recently placed her in a nursing home.

A. one or more of his parents was too senile to be left living in the home alone and needed to be living with the son now.

B. the parents could no longer afford the home, or could not keep up the home, and it had to be sold, the son probably brought the parents to live with him.

and how do any of us know anything about this story anyway? it's all in chinese. OP, if you have a news story to go with it, then post it.

Re: Depressed 72 Years Old Man Jumps to His Death

translation:
at 8 o'clock in the morning an elder man threatens to jump from a 5th story window.
Onlooker: "His eldest son sold the apartment. His second son is an enginner, and doesn't take care of him (the father), the eldest wouldn't take care, the second wouldn't take care, the third son wouldn't take care. The old man had to sleep on the street because he had nowhere to live. Everyone says his sons don't care for the elderly (a social taboo in China)."
Onlooker No.2: "It's a domestic dispute."
The apartment (from which the old man is straddling) is the eldest son's, he's locked himself in, the old man's wife is begging for him to come down from below.
Onlooker No.3 (a residents' vigilante, trying to talk the man out of jumping): "Let's talk inside, there's nothing you can't get over, 'a crap existence is better than a glorious death' (Chinese proverb)"
Then the fire brigade turned up, they rolled out air cushion at the bottom of the building while another team went into the building to break down the door. As everyone were busily inflating the air cushion the old man motioned for everyone to get out of the way.
(after the jump) Due to his injuries the old man died instantly.
(slow replay of the jump) What painful internal struggle had the old man go through (to do this)?

I translated the entire vid, hope the mods would put up my translation
Not being looked after by your sons is a social taboo in China, and the old man had to sleep on the street. It's quite common for parents to live with their children (especially sons), and judging from the age of the building it was next-to-free when the son got it under the communist party's free housing scheme. These days such things don't exist anymore and the Chinese property market is speculative to the max, so the son sold the apartment to make a buck, leaving the old man with nowhere to go. I think he was more disappointed in his own children than not being having a place to live, your children, the people you're supposed to be closest to... tsk tsk social problems in a country in transition

thank you for the translation. it's nice when people are bilingual.

i wonder why the sons wouldn't take care of him? my mother was emotionally abusive and sometimes slapped me or pushed me when i was a girl, but i am still seeing to her needs now that she is elderly. still, i would never ever allow her to live with me, not even for a billion dollars.

It's a question I really don't know the answer but here are a few contributing factors:
First of all the social welfare system in China is shocking, there aren't that many rest homes for old folks and most old folks find the thought of going to a rest home unimaginable.
The Chinese parenting style doesn't really foster close relationships, the father is usually quite abusive by the Western standard, a disciplinarian who will show no signs of warmth whatsoever. This causes a lot of resentment in the child because all you see is your father beating the crap out of you. As the child grows up he either gets Stockholm Syndrome and agrees that the borderline-abuse was correct, or he punishes his dad now that the balance of power has shifted.
Traditionally the wife and the in-laws have really bad relationships, it's almost a stereotype that the wife will try to screw her in-laws over. It's a power-struggle and in this case if the wife gets the upper hand the in-laws are at her mercy.
Lastly in a country where the income disparity is so extreme and resources are scarce due to corruption and overpopulation the ordinary people are desperate to improve their living standards,
getting rid of the elderly is one of the options to improve, and in a country with sky-high prices the elderly cannot afford to live on their own.

Added to the situation was the social taboo of not taking care of the elderly, and the shame on the elderly that their children won't take care of him. The old man may have been driven to suicide by the shame, and by committing suicide he effectively made his sons lose face.

What a selfish dick. Also, was this converted with a non-activated version of avs4u?
