Usually, in a situation like that, the firearm will malfunction due to "limp-wristing", which is firing without a solid grip on the firearm, and not allowing the gasses to cycle the slide and chamber a new round.
He did a fantastic job of clearing the malfunction and getting back into the fight!
A stovepipe in this situation might get you killed!
