Perhaps this is too much information for here; but they are in fact generally Alawites fighting Sjiite muslims. Bashar al-Assad is Alawite, like most of the political elite there, but most of the population Sjiite. They are different subdivisions of Islam. Like back when the Protestants used to get murdered here in Europe by the Catholics.
