Dawn Brancheau: SeaWorld Trainer Killed by Tilikum
On February 24, 2010, experienced SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau was killed by an orca named Tilikum at SeaWorld Orlando in Florida. Brancheau had worked with killer whales for about 15 years and was one of the park's best-known trainers. The incident happened following a "Dine with Shamu" performance while Brancheau was interacting with Tilikum at the edge of the pool. The orca grabbed her and pulled her into the water as visitors and other employees watched. Despite efforts to rescue her, Brancheau died from injuries that included blunt force trauma and drowning. Tilikum was already known for his involvement in two earlier human deaths before the incident involving Brancheau. His history, along with the circumstances of her death, raised serious questions about the safety of trainers working closely with captive orcas. SeaWorld stopped allowing trainers to enter the water with killer whales following the incident. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration later cited SeaWorld for workplace safety violations, arguing that close contact with the whales placed trainers at risk of serious injury or death. SeaWorld challenged the findings, but a federal appeals court ultimately upheld OSHA's position that the company had failed to adequately protect its trainers from a recognized danger. Brancheau's death became one of the most widely known incidents involving animals kept in marine parks and led to greater public debate about keeping orcas in captivity. The case later received even more attention through documentaries and media coverage examining Tilikum's life and SeaWorld's treatment of its killer whales. Although SeaWorld defended its animal-care practices, Brancheau's death permanently changed how its trainers were allowed to interact with orcas and became an important part of the larger discussion surrounding the safety and ethics of captive killer-whale performances. |

They dont belong in captivity, and this whale had killed before, and they still want to keep the whale and work with it, because the whale is that valuable to sea world, it is a business investment that means more to sea world then that girl.

true, yet another thing that is odd she tried calming it down? or atleast it looks like it. Why? I would've gotten outta there ASAP. You aren't going to calm down a 3,000 ton whale. |
