The 20 year old daughter of an oil millionaire has been arrested after a car ploughed down pedestrians in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

“Today there was a terrible tragedy in Kharkiv, as a result of the accident six people were killed and two more are in a serious condition.”

Ukrainian media identified her as Elena Zaitseva, the daughter of local property and oil tycoon Vasily Zaitsev.

Mr Zaitsev said it was unclear what caused the accident and that judgments should not be made simply on social media posts.

The crash occurred about 8:45 PM on Wednesday evening when a Lexus 4x4 driven by Miss Zaitseva was involved in an incident at the intersection of Sumskaya and Bursatskaya streets, in the heart of the historic university city.

The vehicle, which was understood to be travelling at high speed, allegedly hit a Volkswagen Touarag before mounting the pavement and skidding through a crowd of people waiting for the lights to change at a pedestrian crossing.

Footage of the incident posted on Facebook by Anton Gereshchenko, a Ukrainian MP, showed the black 4x4 skidding backwards at high speed down a pavement, sending pedestrians flying.

Three of the dead were named as Oleksandr Evteev, 27, Nina Kobiseva, 28, and Olena Umaeva.

A 30 year old pregnant woman remains in an induced coma. Her pregnancy is not in danager.

The driver of the Volkswagen was lightly injured and has made a statement to police, he said.

Thanks for the link. She ran a red light at 100 kph and they gave her 10 years. The other driver was going thru yellow and got ten years, but they don't say why he got the same 10 year sentence. In the USA as long as you get into the intersection on yellow it is 100% legal.

She has a Ukraine passport and the accident was in Ukraine. I would guess Ukraine is somewhat corrupt, but I doubt Putin has influence in Ukraine now.

It's Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Supreme Court upheld the 10 year sentence in 2020 and even now, in 2022 amidst of the war.
Many speculated her family would pay off the jury, but it was a too high profile case, she will be in jail for another 7-8 years along with the other driver
