On May 30, 2025, a man died by suicide after stepping onto train tracks on Main Street in Fairport, New York, in front of an oncoming train, as reported by Fairport Police Chief Mathew Barnes.

The incident, which occurred around 3 p.m., led to a temporary halt of train operations and a response from first responders, including firefighters and police. Barnes noted this was not the first such incident at this location, referencing a similar event about a year and a half prior.

As police continued their investigation, they worked closely with railroad officials to review surveillance footage and reconstruct the moments leading up to the fatal incident. My late father was an engineer for CSX (& earlier incarnations) for many years. He told me about accidents with people and/or vehicles where people bit the big one. He only gave minimal surface details which was consistent with how he talked/didn't talk about his service in the Pacific during WWII. Of course, he never talked about how these accidents actually affected him but you could tell that there was quite a bit of stuff going on just beneath the surface as a result of these deaths.
