It depends what/where "public" means. True I would rather be in Paris or Prague than Gary Indiana, Oakland, California or any neighborhood with a Martin Luther King Avenue. But comparing whiteys, give me the USA any day...

I took another look at it, and here is a different interpretation. Granted it is speculative, but it is consistent with what we see. The smaller guy was acting passively for most of the time, ducking and talking to the big guy as though trying to avoid a fight. Then, suddenly he turns the aggressor just as the train is approaching the platform, throwing a couple of well timed punches which had the effect of knocking the big guy off balance and in the direction of the tracks. It is quite possible that the smaller guy heard the train approaching and timed his surprise change of strategy on that basis.
