That carnage is what to expect when no available safety devices are used. I would suspect poor vehicle build quality also contributed to the severity of damage. Crumple zone? Yes it crumpled, that is what killed a few occupants.

I'm no doctor but I doubt seat belt or airbag would have helped. Those internal organs got ripped apart & crushed and add in brain trauma. Some accidents are unsurvivable for the most part and sometimes a person is just fortunate that they survive. As an accident investigator-(commercial vehicles) iv'e seen it all. Unbelievable at times.
