A human heart generates it's own electrical impulses without outside stimulation. However, if removed from the body it will only last a short period of time as it requires oxygenation.

From where I am we used to learn in primary school that a heart has its own nerve system. And yes, it will continue to beat for a while even separated from the body. Difficult to watch, but pure biology  |

I would add, that heart has it's own, partially autonomous, nervous system. That's why it can beat when is outside the body. Cool feature, however, in this case, completely useless  |

I used to do a small amount of farm kill for family , It was always entertaining for the kids to take a recently killed sheeps heart and smack it , then watch it give a couple of beats
