Re: Couple on a Bike Dies After Head-on Collision with a Mercedes Van
Without a coroner's report, I couldn't tell you exactly what the specific cause of death was. I can tell you this though, with both vehicles traveling around 30 mph (judging by the braking distances of the van and the black sedan), the forces exerted while coming to a complete stop and having your vehicle instantly reversed from the force of the larger vehicle, would in itself cause internal injuries. However, being that they were traveling on a motorcycle and their bodies continued to move forward once the collision occurred. The question of instantaneous death is irrelevant. What would likely upset family members is the last few seconds before the victims became deceased, which the victims would have likely experienced a huge dump of adrenaline into their body, a great sense of fear, then finally a realization that contact with the van was imminent. So, in short. Regardless of the type of injuries sustained in the collision, both victims either died instantly or made unconscious until their passing. Did they suffer after the collision? I don't think so. Did they suffer just prior to the collision? I think that it has a strong possibility. But they didn't suffer physically, the suffered emotionally and mentally. |

Re: Couple on a Bike Dies After Head-on Collision with a Mercedes Van
it certainly isn't fun having 2 cars coming straight at you on a 2 lane highway doing 100kph (60mph) when it happened to me, it was night and there was one set of lights coming. suddenly there was 2 as one car went to overtake the other. i went to my left (we drive on the left in aus), and they went to my left too. i was on the brakes and going back to the centre of the road, hoping to go between them, but they went back to the middle at the same time i only had time to think "f..., this is going to be a big one". i knew i wasn't going to walk for a very long time, but didn't have time to actually think it. luckily for us, as i was heading back to the middle of the road, the rear wheels locked up in the gravel and we did a nice, easy 90 degree spin. the rear wheels stayed in a small ditch, which stopped us from going into the path of the oncoming cars however, i would say, i didn't have time to be scared. the fear only started once we had driven off and the gravity of what happened suddenly became clear |

Not to mention that the driver of the van chose to pass coming up on the crest of a hill, ALWAYS a bad move because there's NO way to see what's coming towards you, as in this case. Definitely the van driver's fault with a poor reflex reaction from the motorcycle driver... A sad day for everyone involved. |

Re: Couple on a Bike Dies After Head-on Collision with a Mercedes Van
If only the driver of the motorcycle steered to his right. The van never actually leaves its lane, leaving plenty of space for the biker to move to. And I don't think the van was going too fast because it came to a full stop pretty fast and the road was uphill. So maybe, judging by the damage to the van, the bikers were actually going faster.
