Re: Cop Fatally Shoots Mentally Ill Man
I don't think US police are trained to deal with these situations very well. It's either "do as I say or die". Not many other developed countries have such a high kill rate with their police. In an ideal world, like others have said, the police wouldn't be dealing with mental health incidents to begin with. |

Re: Cop Fatally Shoots Mentally Ill Man
"We forgave that officer," Blair's mother said. "We want him to live a long life so he will always remember my son and how he murdered him in that bathroom." Yeah right Mrs. Blair, he can hardly sleep at night thinking about it LOL I bet the cop watches this video while eating his Cheerios every morning before going to work, and thinks "Instead of an 11 rounds magazine I need a Glock 17 with a 17 round capacity, so I can make REALLY sure those "bois" never get up again!" |

Re: Cop Fatally Shoots Mentally Ill Man
And what other choice was the officer left with, exactly? He was more than patient, but in the end he had a right to defend his life and his inalienable right to return to his family alive. As for the knife-holding aggressor, he forfeited his rights when he attacked the officer—while armed with a knife. End of story. While I'm sorry for the woman screaming in the background, I'm glad nobody else was hurt—with the exception of the criminal, who was thankfully removed from society, as he most likely would have hurt or killed somebody else in the future. Good riddance.

Re: Cop Fatally Shoots Mentally Ill Man
When "Do as I say or die" involves telling a dangerous person to drop a deadly weapon and then he charges at you with it. Any normal human being would use self preservation and end the threat. The officer had no choice and you will never prove otherwise. Place yourself in the situation where you have a gun and a violent, mentally unstable person is charging at you with a razor sharp knife in a confined area. Are you gonna just stand there and ask him nicely to please stop as he slits your throat? |

Re: Cop Fatally Shoots Mentally Ill Man
To everybody who commented on this thread. Scenario: You call the police because your mentally ill son is threatening to kill himself with a knife. The cops show up and murder your son... Does that really seem ok with you guys? Or should they have handled the situation a little differently? Like not scream and shout and not shoot the mentally ill son (at least) ten times. If they were frightened of being harmed all they had to do was leave the door closed like the guy wanted them to. The worst thing that could have happened then is that the guy may have decided to kill himself. Same result in the end but at least he'd have been given a chance. The US police forces need better training on how to deal with these types of situations. If it was someone you guys cared about you would agree, but it isn't.

Unfortunately, there is precedent to claim no duty to protect: Warren v. District of Columbia Never call the police. This is not the first time this type of tragic incident happened do to police brutality. |
