Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, Russia's world and regional influence had been continually diminishing much to the alarm of many of their political and military leaders. Within this context, the Russians were pissed at NATO's growing presence in the world in general and in what they considered the Russian sphere of influence in particular. So...when an opportunity presented itself, the Russians reasserted their presence forcefully in a tiny conflict that they couldn't lose. |
