A man was murdered in the heart of Coquimbo after being shot point-blank by a subject who fired at least six shots at the victim at the intersection of Balmaceda and Aníbal Pinto streets.

The 60-year-old victim was walking through the sector when the shots began at him, at which time he tried to escape by entering a restaurant, which he did not manage to die at the entrance to the establishment.

David Díaz, director of Security for the municipality of Coquimbo, pointed out that the municipal inspectors were the first to arrive at the scene of the murder, isolating it while waiting for the arrival of the PDI as ordered by the prosecutor on duty.

Sub-prefect José Cáceres, head of the La Serena Homicide Brigade, pointed out that the proceedings are being carried out to find the person responsible for this fact.

Cáceres added that along with checking the background to identify the victim and find his relatives, it was ruled out that customers of the restaurant where the victim tried to take refuge from the attack had been injured by the shots.

Mauricio Cartes, Coquimbo's duty prosecutor, indicated that a hypothesis is already being worked on as to why the homicide occurred in the heart of the commune, adding that the proceedings are kept confidential.

María Sanguina, owner of the restaurant and chopería "El Zorro", where the victim of the homicide wanted to enter to protect herself, indicated that even she could have been injured as a result of the shots.

Richard Espinoza, president of the Coquimbo Central East Neighborhood Council, indicated that the sector has always had to live with different crimes such as spears or robberies, but not with the level of violence as the event that occurred this Sunday.

This murder is the third homicide in less than a month that occurs in the Coquimbo commune.
