Don't think it was during coupling. No way you'd bang two together with enough force to crush a vehicle. Considering most modern knuckles lock together with little force. I'd say it was a runaway loco.

Who knows what really happened... If it was a runaway then the other engine would be more heavily damaged. With the rail car being smaller and not built as sturdy I could easily see the engines causing that damage during coupling. Even though they weren't going fast they are extremely heavy, and it's not gonna stop if there's a car in the way! It's just going to fold up the smaller vehicle like a wad of paper. And a runaway train, even if it's only just the engine, causes a severe amount of damage when it hits another train car or another engine. There's no way that one of those trains was a "runaway". |
