Being a fellow Canadian I appreciate how quick and clean his last moments were compared to some of the hack jobs I've seen out there. I'm proud of him, he took it like a man. Freaked the fuck outa me though when he slowly opened then closed his eyes.

Let me explain. This hostage would have been treated as a dhimmi (non-Muslim in Muslim land). He would have received "protection", as proscribed by the Quran. Failure to pay the "dhimmi tax", jizya, in exchange for "protection" makes executing him a "blessed thing in the eyes of Allah". Sura 9 (At-Tawba), verse 29 stipulates that jizya be exacted from non-Muslims as a condition required for jihad to cease. Failure to pay the jizya could result in the pledge of protection of a dhimmi's life and property becoming void, with the dhimmi facing the alternatives of conversion, enslavement, death or imprisonment, as advocated by Abu Yusuf, the chief qadi (Islamic judge) of Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid who ruled over much of modern-day Iraq. |
