LANCASTER, (March 12, 2024) — The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has released body camera footage of a Feb. 6 officer-involved shooting of a machete-wielding man who threatened officers.

The video begins by showing surveillance footage of Jonathan SF, 38, breaking the glass door of a convenience store and pointing a machete at the cashier. He can be seen approaching the clerk and swinging the machete at them, hitting them in the hand. The cashier then fled the store.

Deputies responded to the store but did not find Jonathan SF inside, according to the release. Neighboring businesses were asked to call 911 if anyone matching Jonathan SF’s description was spotted nearby.

Later in the morning, deputies were alerted that someone matching the description and carrying a machete was seen at a nearby grocery store. Deputies responded to the store and encountered Jonathan SF at the entrance.

Upon seeing the deputies, Jonathan SF pulled out the machete and another large knife, body camera video shows. After deputies drew their service weapons and instructed Jonathan SF to set the knife down, he attempted to negotiate, saying that the deputies had pointed guns at him first.

The deputies spoke with Jonathan SF for several minutes and asked the store employee who had come out to meet them to radio into the store and tell shoppers to hunker down.

Jonathan SF refused to put the machetes down and eventually backed up into the store. The deputy speaking with Jonathan SF replaced his gun with a TASER as deputies followed Jonathan SF, still shuffling backwards, moving through the store.

As Jonathan SF continued to move through the store, deputies deployed TASERs at him three times and shot him with several less lethal projectiles, which were rendered less effective by a large coat Jonathan SF was wearing.

After the third TASER deployment attempt, Jonathan SF charged deputies with the machete raised. Three deputies discharged their service weapons, striking Jonathan SF several times, according to the release.

Deputies rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived at the scene, according to the release. Jonathan SF was taken to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The "fight or flight" reflex is an interesting phenomenon.

There's a huge rush of adrenalin thats kind of like drinking from a fire hose. It causes some people (even experienced cops) to lose basic sensations of time, hearing, vision, and mental processes, like how many rounds are being fired. Doesn't matter how much training you have, if that mechanism is triggered you'll feel it. It can take several intense experiences before you become jaded to the affects. Kinda like crack...

Excellent and totally righteous by-the-police-text-book kill Cops were absolutely exemplary in trying to non-fatally defuse the situation but the perp had other ideas. Now he's fodder for the public crematoriums

Usually I’m not pro cop in many of these but these cops did everything right. They tried De-escalation. They tried multiple tasers. This guy probably would have taken a hostage if given the chance. In the end the cops had no other choice.

I will say my perception has changed after seeing that officer brutally stabbed to death the other day. As terrible as it was I think the police showing stuff like that can make the public understand why cops respond the way they do. Where it becomes brutality is like the case where they shot & killed the guy in the wheelchair or that poor kid at the hotel they had crawling on the ground. Cops like that belong in prison.
