With as brutal as this was I guess the beheader had a sliver of humanity in him? He cut the major arteries first and waited for a few seconds, and yeah with that the blood supply to the brain is cut off. I agree, about 5 seconds and the victim is unconscious, but still breathing. But god the sound is just so clear and vivid..

Breathing is controlled in the brainstem, and it looks like this executioner may have left a bit of the brainstem intact in the body. It's one of the last things to go.
