Re: Brits Ambushing Taliban in Trashcanistan

Yep, as a gun lover that was the most suspense I have experienced watching DR.

Too bad he didn't have a belt fed, like a Minimi. Gun and a single 200 round belt of 5.56mm ammo weighs less than older model beltfeds like M60 or MG42 with no ammo.

Slow reload but he's good at pumping 7.62 Nato rounds. He had the new semi auto 7.62 sharp shooter rifle. Well I say new, it is around a year old now. Replaces that huge 8mm sniper rifle the sharp shooters were using. As far as I know only the Paratrooper Regiment has got them.

The L129A1. SAS/SBS started to field them in 2008, now it's widely fielded, alot of UK units have them. It's just a free floated HK417 with an ACOG and red dot above it. I don't think it replaced anything. A designated marksman's rifle was needed, and a solution found. UK snipers still use the L115A3 in .338 Lapua. Then again snipers are very different than DMs, and therefore need different equipment.

Re: Brits Ambushing Taliban in Trashcanistan

The media and many websites have wrongly stated the weapon is to replace the 5.56 SA80 A2 or just the 5.56 LSW to give longer ranges.

The british sharpshooters were using the L96 .338 thats now used only by british snipers. Only around 400 of the sharp shooter rifles have been baught. The parachute Regement was the first to use them. the Royal marines were testing the LM7 to replace their marksman rifle the L96.

Then there's no need to address it.

I don't follow British forces as well as I should, but I have worked with many of them. I've never heard of any actual DM rifle in the UK army, or the marines before Afghan, but I could be wrong. The only weapon fielded with optics I've seen is Accuracy Internationals in .338. Just recently, a friend of mine working as a Brit contractor in Afghan got some pics of this tricked out 417 in UK marine hands, so I do know they have them now. It seems nice though, and reports are solid, I do long for the day I get to pull this rifles trigger.
