Brazilian Doctor Murdered at Bar, Possibly on Orders of Her Ex-Partner
Brasiléia, Acre, Brazil A 39-year-old doctor, Elyne d.A.N., was shot twice in the head while sitting with friends at a bar in Brasiléia, near the border with Bolivia. Security camera footage showed a helmeted man approaching her table and opening fire before fleeing. The gunman later exchanged shots with officers and escaped into a wooded area. Police have identified him and continue to look for him. It is believed that Elyne's ex-partner, prosecutor and lawyer Francisco V.N., ordered the attack. Francisco was under electronic monitoring and subject to protective measures after Elyne reported threats and violence. Prosecutors had petitioned the court twice for Francisco's detention over non-compliance with the restraining order. Minutes before the shooting, Elyne activated a panic button linked to the protective order. Because Francisco wore an electronic ankle monitor, the alert went to the state prison administration system, rather than directly to police dispatchers. Monitoring staff called her but no officers were sent to the bar. Military police vehicles later drove past the location without being directed to intervene. Shortly after Elyne was shot, Francisco was found unconscious at his house. He was hospitalized and intubated. A farewell note and medication were found in his house, suggesting he attempted suicide. His condition was described as serious. |

Yeah, she's dead, Jim. By the way, is that lawyer really holding a shirt that says "I am a man who is against femicide?" The irony notwithstanding, if this issue has gotten to the point that there's a T-shirt campaign against it, Brazil has a BIG fucking problem. |
