Because children are gullible. You can get them to say anything when they think they're in trouble. They'll not say what's true, but what they think you'll most likely want to hear or get them out of trouble.

That's why in some civilized countries there are psychologists that are specialized in this matter, and with only one expert that's allowed to question a child.
