I always wonder with stuff like this, seeing as they say there has to be no brain function for someone to be truly dead, is he still alive, because obviously there is some sort of function going on in the brain to control the breathing that is still happening.
I agree but his brain is no longer attached as far as I can tell. It makes me wonder whether the body and mind are two separate entities.

The brain stem is intact, so the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system are working but there are no superior brain functions, he is a vegetable, alive but unaware of its existence.
