Not a fake... As I recall, the original 10mm design was developed for military by HS Produkt in Croatia (a very distinguished gun maker) then eventually modified for police and consumer market in more standard calibers (.40cal, 9x19mm, .45acp) as XDM.

It became very popular throughout eastern Europe and spread to some parts of western Europe. I'm not sure about the year but Springfield Arms obtained rights to manufacture it in the western world where it is commonly known under XD, XD-S, XD-M, and the Hellcat brandings. That’s incorrect. The Croatian HS isn’t a clone, copy or even cousin of the Springfield Armory. It is the same gun. Springfield doesn’t manufacture them in the US. They negotiated the rights to distribute them, with their own branding, in the US.

I’ve got a few of the Springfields, and have sold a bunch more, and they are all marked “Made in Croatia”.

When they’re made for the US market, they’re marked Springfield XD-whatever. When they’re made for sale anywhere else, they’re marked GS and either GS or SF-whatever depending on the model. They’re otherwise identical, and all come from the same place.
