I was okay looking at the leg with the skin peeled back and all the blood and muscle exposed, but I grimaced when I saw what looked like a bone sticking out of the back of his foot.

I saw a car crash in Tacoma last year off of South Tacoma way. I was about to retire from the military as a combat medic and have seen my fair share of gore and death. As I am going through the intersection I just see pieces of plastic and glass everywhere. There is a car about 2 feet in the air wrapped around a pole and I think "Dang, that must have just happened " as there was a single person walking up to the wreck. I drove about 15 feet to park and I look left and there is a leg about 5 feet from me and it's owner about 10. It caught me off guard as I was just on the phone talking to a friend and not in a trauma mindset. I walk up to the dude and as I go to check if he's alive and see his perfectly severed thigh where the leg came from. The crazy thing is that there was no blood at all. If you were to draw the leg with the top of the tib/fib and the bottom of the femur separated, that's what it would look like. As I reached down to check for breathing I then saw his spin through the top of his head and realized that his entire brain had evacuated. Perfectly hollow like a pumpkin. Moving on I went to the car and saw his girlfriend who was collapsing into a water bed like form with both eyes black backballed. I felt for a pulse and I could push 3/4 of the way through her neck. I don't think they're was a single bone intact. (By the way, when someone gets a really bad crushing trauma you get what's called subcutaneous emphysema. So, when you press on soft tissue it'll make a rice crispy sound as air pockets are pushed out.
Anyway, as I'm checking her I see this face to my left and it's the rear passenger and he's alive and in pretty good shape. He lived actually. Turns out these fucking kids had stole this car and were doing 80 mph in a 35, hit a center pothole that them made them serve, hit a slow near the train crossing and catch air only to hot this pole in mid flight. I still don't know how the driver flew out like he did as it hit on his side. Here's a pic from the paper.
