This is in all probability being done under medical supervision to save his jaw from having to be removed. The maggots (often of the green bottle fly lucilia sericata) are placed on the patient for up to 3 days, until the necrotic flesh has been eaten. This is practiced in many countries still including the USA and the UK as it is more effective than antibiotics in some cases.
