Kid was gonna try and take it until he realized his throat was opened up and what was happening. I be the sheer terror in his heart was pretty pure. Adrenochrome anyone?

I'm pretty sure it was mostly just the sheer discomfort of being unable to breathe that made him finally react/squirm.
