Indonesia. On Monday, Rusmanto (40), was attacked while bathing in a former tin mining pit. The pond, a byproduct of illegal tin extraction, is a common spot for locals despite known risks.

Security guards who were on patrol received reports from residents regarding the incident.

At around 16.30 WIB, the victim and his child were bathing in a former tin mine pit.

Suddenly a crocodile appeared from the water and immediately pounced on the victim, dragging him into the hole.

The victim's child who witnessed the incident immediately asked local residents for help.

At 17.43 WIB, a rescue team, together with the police, carried out the evacuation process by draining the water from the underpass at the scene of the incident. Due to the pond's depth (up to 10-15 meters in places) and poor visibility, they used water suction pumps to drain the area, a process that took about 7 hours.

Rusmanto was pronounced dead at the scene from severe injuries, including bite wounds and drowning. The victim was known to be a worker in the injection mine (community mine).

This attack is one of at least three in the area within a week, incl. another fatal one on February 10 and a non-fatal mauling on the same day.

Experts attribute the rise to environmental damage from illegal mining, which fragments crocodile habitats and pushes them into human areas.

The crocodile responsible—a large adult estimated at 3-4 meters long—was captured alive by villagers the next day, February 10, 2026.

After the body recovery, the reptile retreated deeper into the pond but was tracked and trapped using nets and bait by a community team coordinated with local wildlife authorities.

It was relocated to a safer habitat away from settlements to prevent further attacks, in line with Indonesia's conservation protocols for protected species.

Amazing animal.

Glad it wasn’t killed for being itself. It took advantage of an opportunity to eat a large meal that came into its territory. It’s not doing anything that isn’t in its instinct to do naturally. I’ve always loved lizards and this one is a king *or a queen.

The crocodile was just acting naturally. It was being territorial, it was saying that the pit is mine!

Did this happen on a chewsday?

I'm surprised the croc didn't go for the child first, because kids in a mine are known to be particularly tasty. ("Oh sweet child of mine!" ...)
