They may have wanted to spare you the distress of contemplating his final agonies. Agonal breathing is not an indication that someone is dead. In may occur either before or after death (or in cases that do not result in death).

I'm an RN - worked in ICU and Hospice. This is a natural part of dying. People are not conscious or aware at this point...it can last for hours or minutes, but it's a sure sign of the end being near. Some people have it more pronounced than others. And as far as gasping for air, there's no real air exchange. They do this on ventilators too. It's more of a final reflex.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I have the utmost respect for anyone working in the ICU or hospice environment. My brother was a hospice chaplain for 10 years, and his experience largely parallels your. There were some exceptions, however, where the patient was aware and suffering, at least for a while. Fortunately these were in the minority.

That's so sad to witness, I saw my dad take his last breathe two months ago and it was so hard to see him die, almost in disbelief at first, the image replays in my mind, he is at peace now and living an eternal life someplace ❤️❤️
