The slow motion footage shows it's 100% tanto bub. It's interesting that the nakago (tang) was wrapped in a white cloth or paper and the blade was too short for a wakizashi. Just like what was done for a traditional hirakiri ceramony, traditionally wrapping rice paper around the nakago. The biggest evidence is that the blade was in the most common shape/style that tantos are forged in. You simply don't see wakizashi in that blade configuration. Traditionally speaking.

Are you sure? This picture doesnt belong to this assasination, Asanuma was standing straight with eyeglasses intact until the whole length of the sword is in.
